Here are a few tips to get the most out of your GoPro® Camera using the Moto Flak Mount (MFM), by Orion Innovations, LLC.
General Installation Tips:
- Position your MFM as high as possible on your chest protector, without interfering with helmet movement. The upper strap is adjustable, so you can lower the MFM’s position on the chest plate if necessary. The MFM’s rubber feet should rest nicely on the chest plate (or back plate, if mounting rearward).
- Position the lower hooks so that they engage features on the chest plate (or back plate) and cinch straps thru the buckles so that the MFM is securely centered on chest protector. Ideally, the lower straps should have a reasonable angle between them for both good lateral stability and a good down pull on the top hook (~45 degrees to ~90 degrees).
- Position the side hooks and firmly tension straps to prevent loosening or sliding, Ideally, if the side hooks should slide, they should tighten the straps, not loosen.
- The side straps can be removed and not used if the lower straps are positioned so that the angle between them is reasonably wide (~60 degrees to ~100 degrees). This is done by removing the C-shaped clip which retains the side strap (accessed from the backside of the center plate).
- If the lower or side hook is too tall to fit into a thin, wide vent or other chest plate feature, the hook and strap can be removed from the buckle and the strap can be threaded thru the backside of the chest plate; this allows the hook to be pulled thru that feature for engagement. Re-thread the strap thru the buckle and cinch.
- In cases where the loose end of the strap is long, it can be routed back thru the hook’s webbing slot. Threading the end of the strap thru the slot before tensioning the strap is often easier than threading after tensioning. Routing the loose end back thru the hook creates a clean look and can prevent the loose ends from flapping (more useful when mounting rearward).
- Your MFM installation and strap tension should be checked before each ride. This can be done by trying to give it a good wiggle. Very light play is normal, but the MFM should not move much. If it does, inspect engagement points and re-tighten the straps. Don’t use in applications were you can’t get a solid mounting position- Use your Good Judgement.
- If the MFM is only going to be used on only one chest protector, the strap length can be customized to the exact length that you want. This is best done with a hot-knife to cut and heat seal to prevent fraying. An improvised hot-knife can be made using a razor blade or other piece of thin straight steel held with vise-grip pliers. Using a flame or torch, heat the blade until it is glowing orange and quickly press it thru the strap at the desired length on a flat heat resistant surface such as smooth concrete garage floor.
Camera Positioning Guidelines* & Model Specific information:
Note: The most common mistake with chest mounting is angling your camera too low.
Use the wide FOV in your camera’s setup and keep the camera angle higher than you would think is necessary.
- For Frontward mounting, the Hero 3 should be mounted up-right. Start with the camera tilted close to as far up as possible (GoPro case should be very close to contacting the j-hook mount or up against the mount). Then, in small increments, tilt the camera down as needed, based on your footage. Hero 2 and HD Hero cameras should be mounted upside-down and tilted upwards so that when the rider is standing straight, the camera is pointing approximately 20-30 degrees upward. This compensates for the torso angle when in the “attack” or riding position. When mounted upside-down, the camera should be set to upside-down mode in the camera’s settings. This is easily done by referencing your GoPro camera’s manual.
- For Rearward mounting, the camera should point approximately 20-30 deg. downwards when the rider is standing upright; adjust as needed based on footage.
- The Moto Flak Mount will provide the dirt biker, ATVer, and other OHVers with superior camera footage regardless of what GoPro® Hero is used, but the Hero 3 is recommended. Since the Hero 3 has a smaller form factor, it can be mounted upright and therefore slightly higher than prior models. For most users, this will provide a better vantage point. The Hero 3 also provides more clearance; in some extreme riding conditions, this increased clearance lessens the chance of the camera angle being jarred by contacting the handlebar cross-bar pad. However, the vast majority of riders should not experience this.
*These are only guidelines; every user has a different riding style and gear, therefore everyone must fine-tune the angle that works best for them.
